The filter keeps the water clear by catching the particles the pump brings it. We stock Waterfun Lamex sand filters from 50 to 90 cm, cartridge filters for smaller pools, and filter media in sand or recycled glass. The filter is chosen against the pump's flow rate, not on its own.

Sand filter or cartridge filter

A media filter is backwashed and uses water while it does so. A cartridge filter uses no water, but the cartridge comes out and is cleaned by hand.
Sand or recycled glass
Recycled glass filters smaller particles than sand, needs less backwashing and lasts longer before it has to be changed. Quartz sand remains the classic choice and is cheaper to buy.
The sign that the media is finished is pressure that climbs back up quickly after every backwash.
Common questions
How often should the filter be backwashed?
When the pressure gauge reads noticeably higher than the normal working value for your system. That value is noted when the system is commissioned with clean media.
How often is filter sand replaced?
Sand is replaced after several years, when the grains lose their edge and filtration drops off. Recycled glass lasts longer.
How is filter size chosen?
From the pump's flow rate and the pool volume. A small filter against a large pump filters badly.
