Why you need both
If water is drawn only from the floor, leaves and oils stay on the surface and form the dirty line at the edge. If it is drawn only from the surface, the heavy dirt stays on the bottom. A good system combines them.

Common questions
How many skimmers does a pool need?
It depends on the water surface area and on the prevailing wind direction. That is calculated during design, before the concrete is poured.
What does a water leveller do?
It keeps the water level constant by topping up as evaporation lowers it. That protects the pump, because a level below the skimmer leaves the pump running dry.
