The working rule in the industry is that the whole volume of the pool should pass through the filter several times in twenty-four hours.

Flow and filter
That gives the flow rate the pump has to deliver, and the flow rate gives the filter area.

Bigger is not better
A pump larger than the filter does not clean better; it just pushes water through the media too fast and burns electricity.

The first question
So the first question we ask is not 'which pump do you want', it is 'how many cubic metres does the pool hold'.

In the filters we fit today we increasingly use recycled glass. The saving is not in the price of the media, it is in the water and the time not spent backwashing.

Questions. About filtration systems.
How do I choose the right pool pump?
From the water volume, not from the horsepower. Work out how many cubic metres the pool holds and how many times the water should pass through the filter in a day; that gives the flow you need. The filter is then chosen to handle that flow.
How often should filter media be replaced?
Filter sand is replaced after several years of use, because the grains lose their edge and filtration drops off. Recycled glass lasts longer. The practical sign is pressure that climbs again quickly after every backwash.
Does UV disinfection reduce the chlorine needed?
Yes, it lowers it, but it does not replace it entirely. UV deactivates micro-organisms that pass the lamp, while the water in the pool still needs a disinfectant residual.
Can you fit a system to an existing pool?
Yes. That is a good part of our work: a pool built by somebody else, an undersized system, and water that never quite clears.
