A concrete infinity-edge pool, built on a riverbank. The water spills over the far edge and carries the landscape on towards the rock face opposite. A timber deck runs around the water. The ground set the depth and the position of the plant room.

Why the ground decided everything
A riverbank is not a flat garden. The soil near water behaves differently, and the river level moves through the year. That meant the excavation, the depth and the position of the shell did not come from a plan drawn in an office; they came from what we found when we opened the ground.
The week-one and mid-build photographs are here for that reason. They show the foundation and the concrete shell before anything was covered, which is the part that decides whether a pool on a bank stays put or moves.
The infinity edge
An infinity edge is not only a view. The water spilling over the edge has to be caught in a balance tank below and pumped back, so the system is larger than for an ordinary pool of the same size.
The water level also has to stay accurate to the millimetre, or the edge either dries out or floods. That is why on an infinity pool a water leveller is not an extra, it is part of the system.
What the work involved
Like every concrete pool we build, this one went through the same steps: excavation, formwork, steel mesh, pipework, a single concrete pour, waterproofing, the surface, and then the filtration system.
